The fees behind these numbers

Change any figure to match your own account; the table updates as you type. Verified means we read it on the provider's pricing page; approximate means they do not publish it plainly.

PayPal Verified Source

4.40% + $0.30 per payment, then 3.0% above the base exchange rate when converted to INR, plus 18% GST on PayPal's fee.

Payoneer Verified Source

1% when the client pays by US bank debit (ACH), then a 1โ€“4% conversion fee to INR (2% used here). $29.95 a year if you receive under $6,000 in 12 months.

Wise Business Approximate Source

About 1.6% conversion fee plus about $2 for the eFIRC, 18% GST on both, at close to the mid-market rate. Wise shows the exact fee before you convert.

Skydo Verified Source

$19 per payment up to $2,000, $29 up to $10,000, 0.3% above that, plus 18% GST. Skydo says it adds no FX markup.

Bank wire (SWIFT) Approximate Source

Intermediary banks typically take $15โ€“30 on the way (about $20 used here); your bank converts at its buying rate, usually 1.5โ€“2% below mid-market. Many Indian banks charge no inward fee.

GST is 18% on the provider's fee where it bills you in India. Bank-side GST on currency conversion is small and left out. Not included: Payoneer's $29.95 annual fee under $6,000 a year, card-payment fees if the client pays by card, and any fee the client's own bank charges them.

Whichever you choose

  • 1Give the right RBI purpose code for your work (P0802 for software, for example).
  • 2Download the FIRA or eFIRC for every payment. You need it for zero-rated GST on exports and for income tax.
  • 3From 1 October 2026, declare service exports to your bank on an Export Declaration Form within 30 days of the month's end, and collect each invoice within 15 months.

Questions

How much does PayPal really take on a payment to India?+

On PayPal's published rates, 4.40% + $0.30 per payment, a 3.0% spread over the base rate when it converts to rupees, and 18% GST on its fee. On a $1,000 invoice that is roughly 8% of the value, about โ‚น7,000 at today's rate.

What is a take rate?+

The share of your invoice you lose between what the client pays and the rupees that reach your bank, measured against the mid-market exchange rate. It includes fees, the exchange-rate markup and GST on fees.

Which is the cheapest way to receive USD in India?+

It depends on the invoice size. Flat-fee services cost less on larger invoices; percentage fees cost less on very small ones. Enter your own amount above to compare.

Do I still need a purpose code and FIRA?+

Yes. Every inward payment for services is reported to RBI under a purpose code, and you should keep the FIRA (or eFIRC) for each one for GST and income tax. From 1 October 2026 service exports are also declared to your bank on an Export Declaration Form.
