What is an EIN?
An EIN (Employer Identification Number) is a unique nine-digit number assigned by the IRS to identify your business for tax purposes. Think of it as a Social Security Number for your company. Every US LLC needs an EIN to open bank accounts, file taxes, and conduct business.
Why Non-Residents Need an EIN
As a non-US resident, your EIN is essential for:
- Opening a US business bank account
- Accepting payments through Stripe, PayPal, and other processors
- Filing US tax returns
- Hiring employees or contractors
- Building business credit
The EIN Application Process for Non-Residents
Option 1: Apply by Phone (Fastest)
Non-residents without an SSN or ITIN can call the IRS directly at +1-267-941-1099 (not toll-free). The IRS assigns EINs immediately during the call. Best time to call: Tuesday-Thursday, 6 AM - 11 PM EST.
Option 2: Apply by Fax
Complete Form SS-4 and fax it to the IRS at +1-855-641-6935. Processing takes about 4-5 business days. You'll receive your EIN by return fax.
Option 3: Apply by Mail
Mail Form SS-4 to the IRS. This takes 4-6 weeks and is the slowest option. Not recommended for most situations.
